Madeline and the Cats of Rome, delightfully written & illustrated by Ludwig Bemelmans's grandson, was my favorite gift from "George." (Well, apart from the pearl earrings.) Better still was the fact that he read it aloud to me on a lazy Christmas afternoon. Words. Spoken words, rich & resonant beside the fire.
